The Subaru logo is displayed at the carmSubaru of America is recalling more than 47,000 cars and SUVs with remote starters because the engines can start on their own. The recall affects certain Legacy and Outback vehicles from the 2010 to 2013 model years, Impreza cars from 2012 and 2013, and the XV Crosstrek from 2013. The cars all have automatic or continuously variable transmissions.

Subaru says that if the key fob is dropped, it can malfunction and start the engine. The motor will run for up to 15 minutes, but could continue to start and stop until the car runs out of gas or the fob battery dies. If the cars are parked in a garage or other enclosed area, there’s a risk of carbon monoxide buildup which may cause asphyxiation.

There are currently no reports of injuries or deaths related to this problem.

Owners of these models will be notified, but if you’ve purchased your vehicle second hand, you can reach Subaru at the phone # or website below. Notifications will be sent out in a few weeks.

(Reuters) – Ford Motor Co (F.N) said it is recalling 262,000 Fiesta subcompacts from model years 2011-2013 to reprogram the passenger side curtain air bags.

The vehicles originally were programmed so the passenger side curtain air bags would not deploy in certain crashes if the front passenger seat were empty, Ford said.

That information is not explained in the vehicle owner’s manual, according to the official recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall includes 154,604 Fiestas in the United States, with the rest in Canada, Mexico and South America.

Ford will reprogram a computer module on the vehicles so that the passenger side curtain air bags will not be suppressed in a crash when the front passenger seat is unoccupied, the company said.

TOKYO —Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it will recall a total of 2.77 million vehicles world-wide to fix shaft and water pump defects, just a month after the company’s biggest recall for a single part, in a move that may once again dent its reputation for quality after the massive recalls two years ago.

Recalls don’t necessarily hurt a company’s sales in the long term. Still, vehicle reliability plays a large part in the strength of Toyota and successive large recalls could negatively affect its brand image, as seen in a series of serious glitches by the car maker in 2009 and 2010 when it came under harsh criticism for its slow response to global recalls. Toyota has since then aimed for quick responses to fix defects as it strives to regain customers’ trust.

Of the 2.77 million vehicles in the latest recall, 2.76 million vehicles in 10 models including the Corolla and the Avensis, produced between August 2000 and December 2011, will be recalled due to a defect in the shaft connecting the steering wheel to the gearbox, a Toyota spokeswoman said.

The company will also recall a further 630,000 vehicles in five models such as the second-generation Prius and the FCHV-adv fuel-cell vehicle, built between May and September 2011, to repair a defect in the water pump used in the hybrid system, the spokeswoman said.

In all, 620,000 vehicles have both the shaft and water pump defects, including the second-generation Prius, the spokeswoman said.

There have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to these faulty parts, she added.

The latest glitches follow a global recall of 7.4 million vehicles by Toyota last month in the company’s largest recall to date for a single part.

This is an unwelcome setback for Toyota after the Japanese car maker last week reported solid quarterly profits and lifted its profit forecast for the current business year. The company has been bouncing back from the earthquake and tsunami in March last year, despite faltering sales in China on the back of a consumer backlash amid the territorial disputes between Beijing and Tokyo.

On the Tokyo stock exchange, Toyota shares ended Wednesday down 0.8% at ¥3,060, their lowest for the day. The benchmark Nikkei 225 finished nearly flat, rising 0.04%.

To fix the defective shaft that might disable the steering function, Toyota will recall 1.51 million vehicles in Japan, 669,000 in the U.S. and 496,000 in Europe, with the rest of the affected vehicles in Australia, the Middle East, Asia and other markets. The pump glitch, which might cause the vehicles to be unable to run, affects 350,000 vehicles in the U.S.; 175,000 in Japan; 83,000 in Europe; and the rest in other markets.

Toyota owners could be receiving a notification in the coming weeks about a recall that could keep their cars from catching fire.

The auto manufacturer is recalling almost 7.5 million vehicles worldwide for faulty switches on power windows. The recall, which is the largest in Toyota’s history, will affect about 2.5 million cars in the United States, alone.

Gatorland Toyota service manager Rob Hurlbert said the recall is to check vehicles and determine if the factory applied enough grease to the window switch in order to prevent it from overheating. He added that Toyota owners may be putting themselves in danger if they attempt to fix the problem on their own.

Hurlbert explained that a coating of grease is applied to the inside of each switch before it leaves the factory. If there isn’t enough grease in the switch, it is susceptible to more ware, which he said could be potentially hazardous.

“That’s exacerbated if a customer feels that, they might put some other kind of lubricant in there, which certainly can be an issue,” Hurlbert said.

Toyota will inspect and correct the switches on vehicles affected by the recall free of charge. Hurlbert said correcting the problem is a relatively easy fix.

Owners whose vehicles are affected by the recall will be notified by mail beginning later this month. Hurlbert said Toyota will notify owners in waves so that local dealerships and service centers aren’t overwhelmed by the amount of cars needing repairs.

“I expect a couple thousand of our customers to be affected,” he said.

“The repair is only about an hour long, so we don’t expect it to be too much of an inconvenience, and we certainly want to do everything we can to minimize that inconvenience for our customers.”

Subaru of America has issued a recall for the Subaru Forester from the 2009 – 2012 model years. The recall stems from a problem with one of the Forester’s rear seat belts, which could cause problems for parents with young children.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the recall is due to a flawed locking mechanism on the center safety belt in the Forester’s rear seat. According to a NHTSA bulletin , the locking assembly on that belt “may not permit proper installation and secure attachment of a child restraint.” And of course, if a child restraint isn’t properly installed, children suffer a greater risk of injury during an accident.

The problem affects Foresters built between November 26, 2007 and March 13, 2012. All told, 275,000 vehicles are subject to recall.

Subaru says that it will notify Forester owners about the recall on or before April 13, 2012. At that time, owners will be able to take their vehicles to a Subaru dealer, who will install a new automatic locking retractor on the rear center seat belt, free of charge.

Affecting roughly 321,000 vehicles worldwide, a recall by Honda this week began with what appeared to be a far less serious problem, according to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Front doors may not latch properly and could open while the vehicle is being driven or is in a crash, the automaker told N.H.T.S.A. The recall covers 314,000 CR-V crossovers from the 2012 model year and 7,200 Acura ILX sedans, which are based on the Honda Civic, from the 2013 model year. About 167,000 of the CR-Vs and 6,200 of the Acuras are in the United States.

The malfunction occurs if the interior front door handle is being pulled while the manual or power-door lock is activated. The defect could cause a cable to loosen.

Honda said in a news release it was not aware of any accidents or injuries. Customers will be notified of the recall through notices mailed in mid-August.



Last December, the problem seemed to be less serious. Honda began investigating reports of the interior door handles on a CR-V not opening the door although the exterior handle functioned properly.

In March and April, Honda used a new design to correct the problem at assembly plants in Japan and the United States. But toward the end of May, Honda received a report of a front door not being latched on a CR-V. That vehicle did not have the new design, a Honda spokeswoman, Alicia Jones, wrote in an e-mail, so it began another investigation.

After evaluating eight claims of an unlatched front door on CR-Vs and “the potential for similar claims in the United States and other markets,” Honda told the agency on July 18 that a recall was necessary.

There are no reports of doors not being latched on the Acura ILX, but they are being recalled because they use the same door assembly.

Here is one other recent safety action:

• The agency has opened an investigation into why eight bus manufacturers have not recalled vehicles with escape hatches that could be difficult to open in an emergency.

In April, Specialty Manufacturing of Pineville, N.C., told N.H.T.S.A. that it was recalling about 15,000 escape hatches it sold to 13 busmakers because they required more effort to open than the government allowed. The company said that could hamper occupants’ escape.

But the safety agency said eight of those 13 manufacturers that bought the escape hatches had yet to inform their customers that the buses needed to be recalled.

Only one manufacturer, Elkhart Coach of Elkhart, Ind., was identified. In a July 12 letter, the agency told Elkhart that it wanted “to remind you of your responsibilities under federal law.”

Toyota North America has issues a voluntary recall on 2 of its vehicles. The 2005 to 2010 Toyota Rav4 and the 2010 Lexus HS250h Hybrid. Both vehicles suffered from the same issue, and the repair notices should be going out to dealerships shortly.

The problem surrounds the vehicle’s rear suspension and the alignment adjusting nuts.  When serviced for procedures such as new tires or repair, the nut is highly susceptible to being improperly tightened.  If this occurs, the rear tie rod end may begin to move and or build up rust leading to damage or overall failure.  A suddenly breaking tie rod would cause the a Lexus HS250h or Toyota RAV4 to lose major control and would be a disaster waiting to happen.

Lexus has also issued a recall recently for the RX from Nov 2008 to Sept 2010 regarding their always famous sticky accelerator. While it sounds dangerous, the problem is most likely related to a improperly secured floor mat. The no cost repair (which i’m sure isnt anything special) will begin in August 2012
